A Background without Focus

Something complex lately…I’m trying to understand settings on my new Nikon D40. The D40 makes it easy to take good photos by letting the camera handle all the settings, but an amateur should steer clear of the manual modes until he better knows what he’s doing. I’m hoping I can learn by looking at what settings the camera chooses.

A Flash in the Sun

Something bright lately, I’ve tried using fill flash on my subjects. Most failed, however, because I was doing things wrong! By accident, I still did one wrong, but it actually turned out nice, as if I did things right! Maybe next time, I will use the right camera settings, and the photograph will be right the first time.

Diptych and Triptych and a Tutorial

Something artistic lately, I’ve been playing with diptych and triptych styles. I’ve decided to put together a tutorial as well, using the free software, Inkscape, available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and so on.

Light and Camera Settings

Something of a bright idea lately, I’ve been playing with sunlight and light bulb light with different white balance settings on my camera.

Pose For Me, Please

Something difficult lately… I’ve been trying to pose my photography subject! Everything and anything in the name of composing a delightful scene.

End of a Reign

I have tried another pic fic, this time with extra emphasis on the fic, and less on the quality of the pic. If I emphasize too much on the fic, I might start writing short stories for a sister site of mine, allowing “Photographs By Me” to keep a focus on photography, and improving my photograph taking. That said, the story beings.

For the photographs in this part of the story, I used the setting of “night-time along the street” to work together with the yellow lighting I was stuck working with.

Critiquing My Own Photos

Something troubling recently. I’ve decided to critique my own photos!

Critiquing ones own photos isn’t really the best way to go, as other people will be able to see so many more faults, but when one sees faults on ones own, that says a lot! An artist often sees many faults in his own work, but there needs to be a separating line drawn between faults actual and faults imagined.

Sisters in Taiwan

Pic fic number two involves photographs taken in the dark, with a very yellow light. I need to find out what kind of light will be white rather than yellow, as my camera isn’t able to compensate for this color, leaving me to modify every photo manually (auto levels in Gimp over-exposes the photos). Also, the girls in the last photo lack any shoes as I don’t yet have any other than their stock shoes. I know, I know, a writer/photographer shouldn’t settle for missing props for a scene.

The Case of the Missing Ruby Heart

Something different recently. I have decided to try a new type of post, appearing in the new “Pic Fic” category. A pic fic is a fictional story told with pictures to illustrate. Pictures, fiction, pic fic.

The Power of Distance and Zoom

Something wonderous recently, I watched a photograph subject shrink after she finished off a bowl of porridge!

Here we see Sakura before her meal.

Little Sakura

And here she is after!

Little Sakura

Well, maybe it didn’t happen quite like that.

But the effect can be powerful when shown to someone unfamiliar with the technique.
